Bastrop Lakes and Rivers

In Bastrop County not only can you enjoy the Colorado River there are a few private lake communities and  Lake Bastrop managed by the Lower Colorado River Association.

Information on Lake Bastrop

Lake Bastrop is  the largest lake located just north east of the town of Bastrop.  There are a number of subdivisions in the area and there are homes and home sites on the lake that come on to the resale market periodically and due to their scarcity they are highly sought after.

Information on Lake Communities

Just a little further south east of the town of Bastrop there are two small relaxed private lake communities, Indian Lake and Lake Thunderbird.  Both of these communities offer property owners exclusive right to use the lake for fishing, kayaking, and canoeing.  Both also offer some community amenities such as pool, playground, community center, recreation space.  Located about 6 miles from the town of Smithville, about 45 minutes from Austin, and about 2 hours from Houston both Indian Lakes and Lake Thunderbird offer a great get away spot for a minimum investment or year round lake living.

Information on the Colorado River

The Colorado River flows through Bastrop County.  For the settlers in the 1800′s  it served many purposes from a source of water, to a means of transporation, to a defense line for a small settlement, and food source with it’s bountiful fish.  The towns of Bastrop, Smithville, and Elgin all have close ties to the river.  There are numerous parks along the river such as Fishermans Park in Bastrop and Riverbend Park in Smithville.  There are spots to put in for kayaking or canoeing  all along the Lower Colorado:

FM 969 crossing ,Bob Bryant Park in Bastrop,,Fishermans Park in Bastrop , a public access spot in  Tahitian Village and right at Hwy 71 in Smithville.
