Information About Phelan

The community possibly received its name from one of the community’s postmasters, J. C. Phelan, in 1905; and its residents consisted primarily of Mexican miners of the Independence Mining Company, later known as the Phelan Mining Company.  In an area dotted with mine shafts, Phelan became known as ghost town in 1991 with no residents or buildings, only foundations and coal mining artifacts.  The area outside of Phelan has remained rural in nature with  farm and ranch properties surrounding the original area of  Phelan .
