Kayak on Lady Bird Lake in Austin

One of our favorite things to do is kayak, especially on a hot summer day.  Being Bastrop County residents we kayak on Lake Bastrop and there is also kayaking on the Colorado River which is super fun.  For a change of pace we like to head in to  Austin  where you can also kayak on the river in a number of spots, one of our favorites is Lady Bird Lake.

We like to put our kayaks in down by the park right near Zilker Park  under the Loop bridge.  Before we bought our kayaks we would rent there or at Zilker Park Boat Rental which is just outside Barton Springs on Barton Creek.  The single kayak rates are quite reasonable per hour and last time I checked it was about $10/hr.   There are a number of places to rent including the Rowing Dock and the Texas Rowing Center.

There are a few rules to enjoying the Lake which include having floatation devices,  and keeping out of the way of the rowing training classes.  You can go for an hour or for a day.  We like to kayak all the way up to the dam and then back.  Going against the current first is always smart so you can have a more relaxing trip back.

Your pictures are beautiful! We have rivers in Colorado but nothing that looks like this.

This is in downtown Austin and it is fabulous. But you have those beautiful fourteeners in your back yard. There is always a trade off! Both Colorado and Texas are beautiful! Aren’t we both lucky!
