About the Bow and Arrow Ranch

Once a part of the old Camp Swift the Bow and Arrow Ranch has been a private ranch for years.  The terrain is slightly rolling, and in non drought years the pastures have been big producers of local coastal hay for the current owner who raises, trains, and shows AQHA Cutting Horses.  There are four big stock tanks spread out around the property that even in current conditions have a little water left in them.  All it will take is a good rainy season to bring the ponds back to full.

There is a single level block ranch home that has three bedrooms and two baths which sits on a rise and looks out over the ranch.  Below the home there are two barns that have a 13 stalls and 7 stalls with runs.  One of the barns has a bunk room with sink – no bath, a tack room, a tool and wash room, an a feed room.  There are 7 large runs along one side of the ranch.   Being a part of  old Camp Swift there are approx. 25 old foundations from the military buildings that are scattered around the ranch.   The ranch does have some ranch hand/rental properties that include 2 singlewides that are currently rented, 1 doublewide space that is currently rented a doublewide that is in place and being remodeled.

The approach to the ranch is nothing special through Lake Bastrop Acres  but once you get inside the  ranch you feel as if you are a million miles away from town vs just the few that it takes to get downtown.  This is a relaxed ranch with a relaxed lifestyle.  It could however be a real Central Texas show place quite easily if someone wanted to take it to the next level.  It also does offer some development potenital for the future with it’s location .

Today I visited downtown Bastrop on some business and went in to take a look at one of the newest restaurants La Roux Fine Cajun & Seafood Restaurant at 912 Main Street.  The menu is awesome and they even serve frog legs and alligator.

A group of us are going to have dinner there before we go to the Homecoming Rodeo dance this coming Saturday night, August 6th, 2011 – Stoney LaRue is playing!  Right now you can get tickets for( wrist band entry ) for both  Friday  and Saturday at the Bastrop Chamber of Commerce for 25.00 per person.  Tomorrow night at the Rodeo grounds the barrel racers will be competing and that is free!  ( info www.bastrophomecomingrodeo.org )

Also tomorrow night, Thursday August 4th from 6:30 – 9:30 pm  at Texas Boot Company they are holding a party to raise funds for the Bastrop County Animal Shelter for three much needed swamp coolers to keep the dogs cool during all this heat.  There will be a Cowboy Cocktail hour at 6pm and a donation of dog or cat food is requested.  There will also be a fall fashion show, music, and of course time to shop.

This  Saturday  August the 6th, at the Paige Community Center on Main Street the Texas Forest Services will be holding a free workshop “WildfirePreparedness for Homeowners” from 2-5p that will help you learn to assess the wildfire risk on your property and how to reduce that risk.

And on  Saturday morning  August 6th, 2011, Frontier Bank is having it’s Cowboy Breakfast where there will be door prizes, old and new country music, photo opportunities  and they will be serving buisuits and gravy, pancakes and sausage, coffee, juice and water before the Home coming parade ( info 512-303-6000)

With the heat lots of people are turning to the Colorado River for some relief and Rising Phoenix and Bastrop Kayak have kayak rentals.

There is a Great Austo Museum in Rosanky just outside of Bastrop the Central Texas Museum of Automotive History Open Wednesday to Sunday 10-5 and Sunday 1:30-5 Admission is $7.00 for adults and $3.00 for kids. ( info 512-237-2635)

And did you know that there is a family friendly nudist club in McDade! Sure enough.  Called Sahnoans at Star Ranch a 111+ acre property that is heavilty wooded, offering ltos of shade under the trees, there is a covered pavillion and a large outdoor pool.  There is a playground and play house for children, grassy park and picnic tables.  There is day use, overnight cabins, and there are weekly and monthly rates.

If you are a pilot and you are looking for an excuse to take the plane out for a while on Saturday the 5th the La Grange Airport ( Fayette County ) is having it’s fly in and bar b que.  11 am to 1pm.  A 10.00 donation will get you brisket and sausage, potato salad, cookies and ice tea!  Lots of planes to look at and periodically one of the local car shows sets up.  You don’t have to fly in you can drive in too!

Bastrop and the surrounding area  has a lot to offer.  There is something here for everyone!

The mansion is well over 14,000 sq. ft., two stories, with imported Italian marble floors, hand painted silk wall paper, Waterford Crystal chandeliers, and gold leafing, it is obvious Mr. Appelt spared no expense when he built it!

Over the years Mr. Appelt converted the Mansion into the the clubhouse for the golf course.  The Mansion became a well known wedding destination and it was also used for corporate meetings. When Mr. Appelt died the golf course closed.

The conversion has changed the Mansion a little bit but it still has the original Mansion feel and could easily be converted back into a private residence .  The original kitchen is still there with it’s informal breakfast area but it’s use was converted to support to the commercial kitchen and the clubhouse bar and grill that was added where the garage used to be.

One of the series of rooms on the ground floor was converted into a spa area. A series of rooms upstairs now houses a media/meeting room area.  There is a room that was dedicated to brides.  The spiraling staircase at the entryway is amazing.   There is a ladies powder room that is a total  princess room to say the least!

The grounds around the Mansion  are still being well maintained by the estate and the dedicated staff – some of whom have been there for over 12 years. There is a beautiful rose pavilion off to one side of the house that is a circular brick patio that just oozes Southern charm.   On hot summers days a dip in the zero edge pool is very inviting and the views from the verandas , the back yard, and the pool are some of the best in the Bastrop area.

The Mansion, and the golf course are being offered for sale as a package deal but the Mansion can be purchased by itself.  Talk about a stunning private residence!

Although I have a large fenced yard for my dog my husband and I like to take him to local dog parks. We love taking him in to the Austin dog park on Riverside but with time being an issue yesterday I took our deaf puppy Edsel to the Bastrop park.

It is conveniently located and has a large dog and small dog section. Built around some mature trees there is plenty of shade for dogs and owners with a couple of park benches. The area is all grass with crushed gravel walkways and there are water fountains for humans and canines both. There are “waste” receptacle too.

When we were there we had the park to ourselves for about fifteen minutes and then two cute small dogs and their owners showed up and the dogs could race and play along the divided fence line.
