Clearing wooded land – burn clearing example in Bastrop

A common way to clear land in this area is to burn clear. Basically it involves dozing over all of the brush that is unwanted and putting it in to piles and then burning it. It is important to work closely with the local authorities such as police/fire to confirm if there is a burn ban in place or not, and to let them know that you will be burning. Also nice to let your neighbors know so they don’t think your place is on fire! Here are pictures of some clearing that was done recently in the Alum Creek area of Bastrop at one of the local exotic deer ranches.

Here is a short video I put together of the paths/trails on the seven acres at 158 Winfield Thicket in Bastrop. I walked this property yesterday afternoon right after it had begun to rain to see if the wet weather creeks were running. As you will see in the video they were just starting to gather water run off when I got there. These creeks only run when the rain falls in the right area above them, and they can run hard and fast if the rain is a big one. The paths/trails on this property wander to and fro and up and down the varying terrain and cross over these small creek beds in a number of different places all making for some great hiking or trail riding right on the property!

Land clearing technique – doze and burn

One of the ways that people who purchase acreage here in Bastrop and surrounding counties can clear their property is to hire a contractor who will come in with a dozer.

Owners walk the property with the contractor and the discuss what trees they would like to retain such as large oaks or large pines and what brush and scrub they would like removed such as cedar and mesquite. Cedar trees are huge water hogs and mesquites spread like wild fire!

The contractor then dozes the areas and creates burn piles. On a day when conditions are appropriate, such as high dew point, after a recent rainfall, and when there is little to no wind the piles are burned.

In Bastrop County you should request a burn permit from the fire department which is fairly easy to do. It is important to let them know that you are going to burn so they are aware of it and don’t roll on a potential forest/grass fire. Last year 1200+ acres of woodland and pasture land and a few homes burned in a dry and windy spell. There are burn bans when the area is droughty or the conditions are not right for a controlled burn.

Here is a picture of one of my neighbors who is clearing more of his property to create larger pastures for his herd of designer deer.
