Kayaking the Colorado River in Bastrop County Texas

This last weekend we kayaked on the Colorado River from the new private access we have cleared at our ranch located just outside of Bastrop about half way to Smithville. We dropped in about 9:30 in the morning. It was not a very windy morning so the waters just off our ranch were calm. We are located in one of the deepest areas of the river so the waters were not challenging to kayak. We paddled upstream about an hour and then “floated” back home. The water levels are still fairly high so we did not encounter any rapids upstream. We know there are rapids just below us on the Smithville side. It was a nice paddle on a beautiful day. We are thinking about offering parking and access to the river to kayak enthusiasts from our ranch. Hidden Shores is greening up this spring

This afternoon I was out near Hidden Shores just outside of Smithville Texas showing a small rural residential property so I decided to take a spin down to see if the little river subdivision was greening up. There were lots of residents out mowing their lawns, planting flowers, and working on their properties. Most all of the subdivision is located in a flood zone which is typical for river properties so homes need to be on stilts and many lot owners opt to put up RV ports vs a year round home.

Two land listings along the Colorado River in Bastrop County

There are two very different land listings along the river in Bastrop County, one is under one acre in the Tahitian Village subdivision in Bastrop at 266 Riverside Drive, and the second is 7+ acres is in Smithville at 128 Highway 71 East .

About the river properties

The property on Riverside Drive is subject to homeowners association dues and covenants conditions and restrictions. As is typical with properties along any river it is affected by flood status but per the information available there is a buildable site on this particular lot. It is near the golf course and the river park area that are both just down the street.

The property on Highway 71 East is a triangular shaped property with river frontage that is directly across the river from River Bend Park. This property could have some future commercial potential but it is set far enough off of the Highway to lend itself to a rural residential property also.

A different type of horsepower!

For those of you who prefer a different type of horsepower, put on your leathers & brain buckets, pack your chase vehicles, and hit the big slab, doesn’t matter if you are the front door or the tail gunner, just stay vertical, and show up, to make some “noise” at the Smithville 5th annual Thunder on the Colorado Bike Rally.

Held at Riverbend Park at the Colorado River and Highway 71 there are lots of events planned including a parade in downtown Smithville, a Fun Run, a Bike Show, Swap Meet, live music, Texas Hold ‘Em and more. There is (limited ) camping on site but lots of B & B’s and hotel/motels in the area. If the rally doesn’t keep you busy enough there and lots of things to do and see in and around Bastrop County and the towns of Bastrop and Smithville. Gates open at Noon March 18th. $15.00 gets you a three day wristband!

Smithville Texas is preparing for the 5th annual Thunder on the Colorado bike rally for those of you who prefer a different type of horsepower!

Smithville has a recycling center on Hwy 95 just past the bridge over the Colorado River, across from Brookshire’s. Run by the City the center handles news paper and magazines, cardboard and paper feed bags, plastics # 1 and #2, auto batteries, aluminum and steel cans, waste oil. Pumpkin Patch in Smithville

As a little girl I remember my parents loading my brother and I up into the family car and we would drive about 2o minutes from our home in Golden Valley out to the countryside every fall to a big pumpkin patch. This was a big outing for both of us and every year we made it a competition to find the best pumpkin in the patch. We would run around in the brisk fall air with ruddy cheeks trying to out do one another! My parents were very patient with us and we would hunt through every pumpkin in the patch until we found “the one”.

As I drove through Smithville the other day I noticed that the Pumpkin Patch was in place on 5th at the corner. I stopped to take a picture to post and all of those memories came flooding back to me. Come on out to Smithville and make your own fall memories!

Horse friendly vacant land in Smithville

Here is a video that I produced for a vacant land listing I have just outside of Smithville that I would consider to be horse friendly. It is approximately ten acres and has that good sandy type soil for drainage. It has been cleared and has had top soil added for improved pasture growth. There is a stock tank that catches during the wet weather that could be a source of water for grazing animals. It is fenced and now has a paved drive in.
